Donald Trump 'reviewing Cuba policy', says White House

Possible hardening of stance towards communist island follows improving relations under Barack Obama

Tom Batchelor Friday 3 February 2017

Donald Trump is to conduct a "full review" of America's foreign policy towards Cuba, White House press secretary Sean Spicer has announced.

He said the President planned to look at "all" aspects of how the US deals with its historic enemy, which lies just 90 miles south of Florida.

Human rights would be a key part of Mr Trump's revised policy towards Cuba, the press secretary said.

Mr. Spicer's comments suggest Washington may take a harder line with Cuba, raising the possibility of new trade embargoes and the cancellation of commercial flights from the US, which were only recently introduced.

Mr. Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro established full diplomatic ties and opened embassies in their capitals in 2015. The former US President visited Havana last March.

But Mr. Trump has threatened to end the period of improving relations.

In November, he tweeted: "If Cuba is unwilling to make a better deal for the Cuban people, the Cuban/American people and the U.S. as a whole, I will terminate deal."

AFRICAN CONTINUITIES

One of the world's most fascinating destinations, Cuba has something for everyone, from its stunning colonial architecture, UNESCO preserved habitats, breathtaking scenery and a wealth of virgin tropical beaches. Much of Cuban culture is definitely African in origin, it's music, folklore, dancing, much of the food. Music is in the feet of every Cuban. The African origin has given Cuban music a prestige recognized the world over. Today the island contains priceless survivals of African cultures. In addition, Cuba hosts a number of other Diaspora communities from the neighboring islands.

HAVANA

A unique destination and one of the most famous cities in the world, Havana is a living time capsule of times past, from its Spanish colonial history to the enduring legacy of the Revolution. An intensely atmospheric city, it contains some superb architectural gems and many other cultural and historical sights. Havaneros (natives of Havana) love their city and it's not difficult to see the reasons. Amid the warm crystalline waters of the sparkling Caribbean, over five hundred years of roller-coaster history have conspired to create one of Latin America's most electric and culturally unique societies. Havana is a one-of-a-kind city. As the Caribbean's largest and most vivacious metropolitan areas, its romantic atmosphere and infectious energy are the stuff of legend.

SANTIAGO de CUBA

cuba in depatSet on the seaside, near the island's eastern tip, Santiago de Cuba is the country's second-largest city. Vibrant, tropical, and often sweltering, Santiago is the country's liveliest cultural showpiece, outside of Havana. With a population just under a half-million people, Santiago is a world apart, with a unique history and rhythms all its own. The city has produced some of Cuba's greatest contemporary musicians as well as several of its most stalwart revolutionaries, and it has served as the stage for some of the most storied events in Cuba's modern history. As the capital of the old Oriente province, it has the largest Afro-Cuban population in Cuba and a resolutely Afro-Caribbean feel that distinguishes it from the rest of Cuba.

CIENFUEGOS

The colonial town of Cienfuegos was initially settled by immigrants of French origin. It has preserved a cultural link to these early settlers not only with the visible urban fabric but intangibly within an ethnic mix that also includes African, Spanish, and Chinese heritage. Situated on the Caribbean coast of southern-central Cuba at the heart of the country's sugar cane, mango, tobacco and coffee production area, the town first developed in the neoclassical style. Cienfuegos is the first, and an outstanding example of an architectural ensemble representing the new ideas of modernity, hygiene and order in urban planning as developed in Latin America.

TRINIDAD

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Trinidad, Cuba, was built on the back of the 19th-century sugar and slave trade. At the height of Trinidad's sugar-fueled revolution in 1827, the sugar mills were powered by the hands of slave-labor. The Africans shipped from the west coast of Africa brought their religions with them, and beliefs in the orishas (saints) of the Yoruba religion persisted and evolved. Santería is a syncretic religion formed from merging Roman Catholicism and Yoruba beliefs and today, priests of Santería practice in Trinidad. Rumba, the percussion-driven dance, that was practiced by African brotherhoods, can be seen in clubs and dance venues in Trinidad today..
