Jake,

LET ME TEACH YOU SOMETHING --- for the 99%%%tile, we know who is Black and who is not.  Black folks on a whole just don't say certain things and respond certain ways.  We definitely know that the likelyhood that a combination of these varibles  imperialist/entitled/elitist/etc. all in one concept is almost definitely a White Thought Process - hence being White or and UNCLE TOM.
Let's start there.  I am off to Tennis with my daughter and will return to piss you off some more so you can continue to dine in "avoidance".  Jerry is on it - and he doesn't have retracting jaws - just like me!  You should have not invited us to "dinner".

I don't use a cover name, Jerry. From my email address you have my last name, which you used, and I signed the previous post with my first name. Like you, I used to live and work in Japan, which is where the pseudonym comes from.

As for being cryptic, I beg to differ. I thought Luke made a number of valuable points, which he stated more eloquently than I could. Nonetheless, to wit:

1) Gentrification is about class , which is sometimes, and perhaps all too often, about race as well. But there are black gentrifiers, and there are whites who are displaced. Painting it as a black-white issue glosses over these subtleties and nuances, as does calling people hypocrites and crypto racists.

2) Not everyone who leaves the community does so because of gentrification.

3) I support 901 Monroe as planned. I will patronize it. Unlike you, I do not find a "wholesale giveaway... that obliterates all green space." Instead, I see it as an excellent use of space across the street from a Metro station, and wish similar things would happen within a half-mile of most stations.
I am concerned about runoff with regards to McMillan, but I support some development there.

4) I find your use of race to be opportunistic and disgusting. I have no idea what color Allison Stewart's skin is, and the idea, implied by the posts of you and others, that her skin color, or mine, or anyone's, determines her opinion on Ward 5 matters is noxious. I hope that everyone can treat people as individuals, judged on their own merits. I have a hard time believing that you or anyone else would call someone a hypocrite or crypto racist to their face unless provoked, yet online you seem to have no problem tossing these terms around as insults. If you want dialogue, there are better ways to get it, Jerry.

Finally, I resent that just because I do not often participate in the sideshow that is the Ward 5 listserv I am labeled by you as "unengaged." There are more effective uses of my time, and I wish that was true of the twenty or so people who use this listserv.

Best,

Jake
