[WardFive] DPW Observes Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1

DPW Observes Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1

Sanitation and parking enforcement services will be suspended until Tues., Sept. 2.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) announced today how services will be affected Monday, September 1, when the District observes Labor Day. Trash and recycling collections and street and alley cleaning will be suspended.  Parking enforcement also will be suspended. Services will resume Tuesday, September 2.

Trash/recycling collections:  Monday trash and recycling collections will “slide” to Tuesday. Tuesday collections will slide to Wednesday and so on through Saturday when Friday collections will be made in once-a-week collection neighborhoods. Where DPW collects trash twice-a-week, Monday and Thursday collections will be made Tuesday and Friday while Tuesday and Friday trash collections will be made Wednesday and Saturday. Recycling collections, which are made once-a-week citywide, will slide to the next day through Saturday.  DC regulations allow cans to be in the public space between 6:30 pm the day before trash/recycling collection and 8 pm of the collection day.

Parking Enforcement:  DPW will suspend enforcement of expired meters, residential parking and rush hour lane restrictions.  Also, booting, towing and abandoned vehicle removal will be suspended.  Citywide parking enforcement resumes Tuesday, September 2.

Ft. Totten:  The Ft. Totten Transfer Station, located at 4900 John F. McCormack Drive, NE, will be closed Labor Day and will reopen Tuesday, September 2, 1 pm to 5 pm to DC residents. DPW will conduct its weekly household hazardous waste/e-cycling drop-off Saturday, September 6 and because this is the first Saturday of the month, residents also may drop-off personal documents to be shredded. On the first Thursday of each month, DPW accepts household hazardous waste and e/cycling between 1 pm and 5 pm but no documents for shredding will be accepted because DPW cannot secure those items until the vendor is on site September 6. For more details about HHW/e-cycling/document shredding go to http://dpw.dc.gov/service/household-hazardous-waste-e-cycling-document-shredding

Directions to Ft. Totten:  Travel east on Irving Street, NW, turn left on Michigan Avenue, turn left on John F. McCormack Drive, NE and continue to the end of the street. For directions from additional locations, please go to http://dpw.dc.gov/node/414922.
