In the future many health insurance plans on the exchange may not cover visits to any hospital. Instead, individuals may be directed to a specific hospital, in order to reduce costs. Notably, the Maryland health exchange has recently introduced some new plans which work this way. However, DC Health Link mostly has plans with national coverage and broader hospital options.

There are still concerns over the viability of the DC Health Link insurance exchange, and the exchange still won't release information on how many people need to enroll to make it sustainable. A key concern is whether DC should have created a state-run exchange instead of joining a federal exchange.

The Association of American Medical Colleges claims the U.S. is facing a critical shortage of doctors by about 130,000 as soon as 2025. Currently, the shortage is estimated to come from the higher numbers of people on health insurance and the fact that the age of people over 65 who need special care is starting to double. However, some believe if more people begin to receive treatment, at least partially from providers who are not doctors, but instead get some treatment from non-physician primary care providers through a team-based care approach, there is no need for concern.

The second enrollment period for the Affordable Care Act started on Saturday. According to a new Gallup poll, more than half of Americans, specifically 56 percent, disapprove of the Affordable Health Care Act.

The American Heart Association has released a study which shows that children can be poisoned by energy drinks. This study was authored by Dr. Steven Lipshultz who has treated children after they consumed too many energy drinks and became sick. Children experienced seizures and abnormal heart rhythms in addition to other side effects from the drinks. In many cases, the parents didn't even know the children had consumed the drinks.

Idaho's state insurance exchange is proclaiming that they had an "incredibly successful" launch of the state's own exchange. Pat Kelly, Executive Director of Your Health Idaho, said the new website received "13,000 unique visitors and its phone banks fielded 700 calls."

A new large study has found that there is a different drug that can protect people from heart attacks and strokes. This drug can be particularly useful for high-risk individuals who are unable to receive benefits from statins. Study results have shown lower LDL levels and fewer cardiac events among the group that was given the alternative treatment.
