DPW Notifies Residents It’s Time to Apply for the Sidewalk Shoveling Exemption

Residents who qualify for the exemption from enforcement for not shoveling snow/ice after a storm are homeowners, 65 years or older and/or living with a disability.

The Department of Public Works mailed postcards to residential and commercial property owners to notify them of the requirement to shovel their sidewalks within the first 8 hours after the end of a snow/ice storm. DPW is advising residents to apply as soon as possible for the exemption from enforcement of the sidewalk shoveling regulation if they are homeowners who live in their own home, age 65 or older and/or are living with a disability. Residents must apply annually for the exemption from sidewalk shoveling enforcement.

DPW is responsible for enforcing the requirement for residential and commercial property owners to shovel their sidewalks after a storm ends.

To apply for the FY 2017 exemption, which is valid October 1, 2016 through April 30, 2017, residents may:

•             Apply online at DPW’s Website: https://sse.dcdpw.us.

•             Apply by calling the Mayor’s Citywide Call Center at 311. Applicants should receive a confirmation number at the end of the call.

•             Apply by mailing the completed Sidewalk Shoveling Exemption application, obtained at http://dpw.dc.gov/service/sidewalk-shoveling-exemption to:

Government of the District of Columbia

Department of Public Works

2000 14th Street, NW

Washington, DC 20009

DPW’s Solid Waste Education and Enforcement Program (SWEEP) officers are charged with enforcing the sidewalk shoveling regulation beginning 24 hours after a storm ends.

For information about preparing for winter weather, DC’s snow program, warming centers or seeing where District Snow Team plows are working during a winter storm, go to snow.dc.gov. During snow season, it is important to stay informed about weather conditions and how District services are affected
