[WardFive] Snow Team - Full Deployment

District Snow Team Readies for Full Deployment in Advance of Overnight Snowfall

Pre-Treatment of Major Streets and Highways Began Wednesday, January 4

The District Snow Team will go into a full deployment on Thursday, January 5, with more than 220 plows scheduled to be on their posts by 3:00 p.m. Forecasters predict a light snow beginning as early as 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. On Wednesday, the District took the added precaution of pre-treating major streets and highways with its “hot mix.” The mix consists of brine and beet juice and helps retard freezing.

By 10:00 p.m., Thursday, there is a 60% probability of snow, possibly accumulating up to an inch. With temperatures predicted to be below freezing, it is likely that any precipitation will stick.

Motorists are asked to drive carefully and remove any snow from their vehicles before travelling. As a precaution, property owners should spread an abrasive – rock salt, deicer, or non-clumping kitty litter – on their sidewalks.

Property owners – residential and commercial – are reminded that they are required to remove snow from their sidewalks within the first eight hours of daylight after a snow event ends. Residents who are homeowners and live in their own homes and are age 65 or older and/or living with a disability may be eligible for an exemption from this requirement. For further information about the exemption process and to receive an application, call 311.
