Norton to Take Part in Ribbon Cutting for New Sherman Circle Lights

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will join Ward 4 Council member Muriel Bowser, Rock Creek Park Superintendant Tara Morrison, and community members for the ribbon cutting of the newly installed lights at Sherman Circle NW (near Kansas Ave. NW and Illinois Ave. NW) tonight, August 29, 2012, at 7:00 p.m.  Following the 2010 murder of Ward 4 resident and Catholic University student Neil Godleski in Sherman Circle, a National Park Service (NPS) park, Norton asked the NPS and the U.S. Park Police to join her and Council member Bowser to tour the park space, which is in the center of a traffic circle, after dark.  Norton found a completely unlit park, while nearby Grant Circle was fully lit.  Norton got a commitment from the NPS to pay for the lights in Sherman Circle, but the funds were delayed.  The Congresswoman is grateful that Council member Bowser, working through the city government, was able to find the money to pay to light the park.

"When it comes to public safety, delays by the federal government cannot be tolerated," Norton said.  "I am grateful that, recognizing that the delay could lead to further risks to the safety of the community, the District government stepped up after Council member Bowser sought the funds for the installation of new, permanent lights in Sherman Circle.  Not only will the lights further beautify the park and the Ward 4 neighborhood, they will allow residents living nearby, or people taking shortcuts through the park at all hours of the day and night, to feel safe."
