SOS...URGENT...HELP...Save The D.C.Public School Librarians...
Our Petition Needs100 More Signatures

DC politicians and school superintendant , a.k.a. "Chancellor", Kaya Henderson, product of "Teach for America" andMichelle Rhee fame, is removing librarians from all public schools in DC.  This is an intolerble act, an indecent act, prompted by ignorance of basic educational principles, even though necessary budget cuts are given as the reason.

Thanks for spreading the word aboutSaving School Librarians - thanks to you, we only need 100 more signatures to reach our goal of 1500 supporters! We also had some recent press in the DC Examiner and theHuffington Post.

and

We will meet with Chancellor Henderson on Thursday. If we reach1500 signatures before Thursday, Change.org will automatically email the petition to the Mayor and the Chancellor - let's do it!

I adore and admire this young sister for turning someone's ugly internalized oppression into beauty and poetry. My faith is restored -- there is hope for this next generation!

THE STORY OF LOVERS ROCK – DC PREMIERE

Lovers Rock, often dubbed 'romantic reggae' is a uniquely black British sound that developed in the late 70s and 80s against a backdrop of riots, racial tension andsound systems. Live performance, comedy sketches, dance, interviews and archive shed light on the music and the generation that embraced it. Lovers Rock allowed young people to experience intimacy and healing through dance- known as 'scrubbing'- at parties and clubs. This dance provided a coping mechanism for what was happening on the streets. Lovers Rock developed into a successful sound with national UK hits and was influential to British bands (Police, Culture Club, UB40) These influences underline the impact the music was making in bridging the multi-cultural gap that polarized the times. The film sheds light on a forgotten period of British music, social and political history.

(1)Second level property assessment appeal hearing appointments are being set.  We have new, upgraded strategies to share that we'll present in a comprehensive HEARING ROLE PLAY.  We'll share a detailed step-by-step plan for preparing your appeal.  Remember, the appeal process is changing so this may be our last appeal season before a major rule change.

(2)Recently, the Post has investigated reductions in 500 commercial property assessments.  One of the articles stated that, "Some owners saw the value of their multimillion-dollar properties lowered by 40 percent or more, which shaved tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars off their tax bills". These are the kind of results we have accomplished for some of our members.  Second level appeal letters are going out withBRPAA letterhead & information.  We have recommendations on how to deal with these so don't miss this empowerment session.

(3)As you know,WPFW(89.3FM) is a vital resource for our community.  It is a great way to the truth out.  Many members of Urban Housing Alliance heard about the Alliance through WPFW(89.3FM). I became a Local Station Board Delegate to make sure that WE would have a continuing voice for the uplift & preservation of our neighbors.   Now, I invite you to be a candidate for our WPFW(89.3FM) Local Station Board.  The deadline for filing will be COB August 30th.  (Elections are every two years.

I will share information and answer questions at our meeting.  I invite you to learn more about the importance of WPFW(89.3FM) to low and moderate income residents.  As much as anything, I am inviting you to be an important part of making history.

BY THE WAY, WE HAD A BALL AT THE URBAN HOUSING ALLIANCE ANNUAL COOKOUT.  I HOPE YOU WERE THERE.
EVERYTHING WAS EXCELLENT & PLENTIFUL.  MORE THAN 70 FRIENDS, FAMILY& NEW FRIENDS JOINED US FOR A GREAT TIME.  MANY THANKS TO ALL.
QUESTIONS CALL  202/667-9011

Please remember the Alliance is a grassroots 501(c)(3) organization. We NEED your active participation and your tax deductible contributions. Please help.  You may donate cash or write a check payable to

TASC presents: Two Grant Writing-Workshops-August 30th

Did you know that despite the recession, foundations awarded $46.9 billion in grants in 2011, and the Federal Government provides $500 billion annually through grants and assistance? Grant money is available for organizations that know how to access it. Learn how!

Grant Seeking Basics (8:30 to 11:00 am)

Designed for new personnel as well as experienced staff who seek to refresh their skills, this workshop will help you to:

Get yourself and your organization ready for fundraising;

Identify funding prospects;

Develop a fundraising plan and make your plan work;

Prepare high-quality proposals; and

Build long-term relationships with funders.

The 30-page handout provides step-by-step guidance and identifies resources that can help streamline and simplify the grantseeking process.

Intro to Federal Grants (12:30 to 3:00 pm)

New to federal grants? Federal RFPs (Requests for Proposals) are lengthy and can be intimidating. This workshop will show you how to:

simplify your search for federal grants;

receive automated email notices of new opportunities;

and manage the proposal development process from conception to submission.

You will spend time de-constructing an actual RFP so that you can pursue federal grants with confidence!

The workshops will be conducted at the Josephine Butler Parks Center, 2437 Fifteenth Street, NW, Washington, DC onAugust 30, 2012. Register by August 6 to receive the earlybird price of $60 per workshop ($75 after August 6). Save $20 if you sign up for both. The deadline to register is August 23.
Space is limited so register early!
