[WardFive] DPW To Observe Labor Day, Mon., Sept. 2

DPW To Observe Labor Day, Mon., Sept. 2

Sanitation services will be suspended.

Most parking enforcement will be suspended.

DPW will, however, enforce parking regulations around Nationals Park, Sun., Sept. 1.

The DC Department of Public Works will observe Labor Day, Monday, September 2, and most services will be suspended.   However, the Nationals will play a home game at Nationals Park Sunday, September 1, and parking regulations in that neighborhood will be enforced.   Vehicles violating these restrictions will be ticketed and towed.  Other parking regulations, including expired meters, residential parking and street sweeping, will be suspended Labor Day only.

Sanitation services will be suspended for the holiday and will resume Tuesday, September 3.

·         In once-a-week trash and recycling collection neighborhoods collections will “slide” to the next day, so Monday’s collections will be made Tuesday, Tuesday’s collections will be made Wednesday and so on.

·         In twice-a-week collection neighborhoods, Monday/Thursday collections will be made Tuesday and Friday and Tuesday/Friday collections will be made Wednesday and Saturday.

·         Street sweeping will be suspended Monday, September 2 so motorists will not need to move their cars that day.

The Ft. Totten Transfer Station will be closed Monday, September 2 and will reopen Tuesday, September 3 to residents to bring trash, bulk items and recyclables between 1 pm and 5 pm.

The next Saturday household hazardous waste/e-cycling/document shredding drop-off day is September 7, 8 am to 3 pm, (these services are available every first Saturday of the month, except holidays).  To accommodate residents whose religious beliefs prohibit them from using the Saturday drop-off, DPW will accept only household hazardous waste and e-cyclables on Thursday, September 5 from 1 pm to 5 pm.  (DPW usually provides this alternate drop-off day the Thursday before the first Saturday of the month.  DPW will not accept personal documents for shredding on Thursday as there is no way to secure these items until the contractor arrives on Saturday.

Directions to Ft. Totten:  Travel east on Irving Street, NW, turn left on Michigan Avenue, turn left on John F. McCormack Drive, NE and continue to the end of the street. For directions from additional locations, please click on http://dpw.dc.gov/node/414922.
