[WardFive] Re: [ward5] 50th Commemorative Anniversary

Ward 5 Neighbors and Friends:

I just responded to the call below to sign up to be in a contingent of D.C. residents who will be placed front and center at the 50th Anniversary March on Washington as we make visible our call for D.C. Statehood.  When we reflect back on the platforms that were promoted at original March on Washington in 1963, civil rights, voting rights, jobs through public works programs, increasing the minimum wage, etc., we realize that significant progress has been made in every one of them except one:  autonomy and self-governance (i.e. Statehood) for the District of Columbia.

With the eyes of the nation and the world on Saturday's march, let's make sure the camera's fall on a massive group of D.C. residents, in front of the stage, holding signs and demanding the rights that Americans in every other jurisdiction take for granted.  E-mail cleancity@dc.gov and sign up to be a part of this historic initiative.

Ward 5 Neighbors,

Please check out the important info below regarding some provisions being made by the Office of the Clean City Initiative for the DC Statehood Rally scheduled to take place on August 24, 2013.

Thanks.

History is in the making here in Washington, D.C. This Saturday, hundreds of thousands of people will flock to the National Mall to commemorate 50 years since the March on Washington where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous "I have a dream" speech. With so much excitement and so many people with so many issues, which deserve to be placed at the forefront, it is imperative that the rights of the residents of the District of Columbia be appropriately represented.

To that end, we have made provisions for residents who wish to stand up for DC voting rights, autonomy, and statehood to be prominently placed. The first 100 residents from each ward will be able to represent the interests of the nearly 700,000 DC residents who have been and remain disenfranchised.

For those who accept this call, a separate email will be sent identifying meeting locations and pertinent logistics. There are some important things to consider when assessing if this type of participation in this event is right for you.

1. While thousands of DC residents are participating in a Rally not far from the Lincoln Memorial advancing DC Statehood and Self Determination, you will be making DC's presence clear by being at the larger rally. Staking out this space will ensure that activists from around the country and the media see DC's stance on its future independence and ability to govern itself.

2. Arrival time will be very early (ie: 6am). Tentatively.

3. Departure time will vary based on the length of the actual program.

If you are interested in participating in this aspect of the DC Delegation, please send an email with name and contact information tocleancity@dc.gov

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you Saturday at both events.
