[WardFive] Re: Digest for friends-of-mcmillan-park@googlegroups.com - 7 updates in 2 topics

Hello everyone,

I just looked at the video ... https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#inbox/15e7ca4845bcc0fd?projector=1 ... from 50 seconds on, this sounded almost identical to what I proposed years ago when there was the flooding ... within 30 days, DCWasa suddenly presented an idea to the community which would mitigate future flooding... would be nice if they gave me some credit ....! Let me pat myself on the back since they won't .. lol. Love it ...!

It would be nice if the City actually did something great with the rest of McMillan ... see what else the original designer was able to effect...

In the late 1800s, landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted led a group that lobbied politicians to create a park that would protect the falls from further development. Today, the 400-acre Niagara Falls State Park, the first of its kind in the country, sits directly on the border between Canada and the United States. Miles of hiking trails wend through the scenic park; along the way, you can learn about the area's history at the visitors' center. There's also plenty to do indoors around Niagara Falls. The area has remained a family-friendly destination, with indoor water parks, an aquarium, arcades, and casinos for the 21-and-older crowd.

Hope all is well,

Rob Ramson

Time changed: We just learned yesterday that the hearing will begin at 9am, not noon.

Here's a URL to the new/updated message below for those of you who tweet or use

This may be the public's final chance to be heard on this matter, and while we were hesitant to encourage
the public to come out to this past Monday's meeting, fearing that the hearings would not get to
the public (and we wanted to avoid the public having to wait all day for nothing — which was
the case Monday), this will be the chance to speak or just watch the proceedings wrap up.

Thank you! -Kirby

FRIENDS of McMILLAN PARK

FOMP: Mayor's Agent McMillan Remand Hearings to Continue, September 18th at noon; Zoning Decision Meeting still on for September 14th -- TIME CHANGE: BEGINS AT 9am

Dear Friend of McMillan Park,

The continuation of the Mayor's Agent for Historic Preservation hearing that was on Monday, September 11th, will be on Monday, September 18th, beginning at 9am
.  Earlier information from the Mayor's Agent was that the hearing would begin at noon on the 18th, but we were informed that the hearing now will begin at 9am.  Location is the same: 441 4th St. NW, room 220 South (same room Zoning hearings are held in). Community organizations and members of the public may testify after the parties in opposition (that's us) conclude on Monday.  Please see earlier announcements for details.  We have already been warned that there might not be a webcast of the September 18th hearing.

This may be the final opportunity for the public to testify on this case before the remand proceedings conclude and the matter is submitted back to the D.C. Court of Appeals for consideration.  Whether you'd like to testify and have your remarks become part of the record, or simply join the audience in the 'court of public opinion' on this matter, this is your chance.

I haven't finished reading the case--just terrific. I remember hearing
about it because Ro Quander is an esteemed Brookland neighbor and
historian.

And I have to say, GO Andrea--both of you Andreas! And, of course, Mr.
Hansen and his thoughtful and truthful testimony. Absolutely refreshing and
and strengthening. I concur with Jean-Christophe that the testimonies of
experts for our team were excellent, substantive and way above VMP's petty
contentions.

Last night as I was thinking about the VMP crowd, I felt sad at the
mediocrity, lack of curiosity, better-than-everyone else vibe, unwilling
ever to come to the table parade of actors passing through. Then I decided
that the whole thing they've created--the development idea itself as well
as their insistent contentiousness is really pathetic. If their project
eventually flies, it will not be on its merits.

I came across this video of the Project Manager for DC Water in 2013 and
shared it around. Even to Jack Evans' wife after a meet and greet at Zach
and Paul's. A couple of things about it particularly struck me: the
engineer proudly complimenting "those guys back in the day really knew what
they were doing!" Not what the Silman report asserts. Also note the comment
about traffic on North Capital.

To add a point upon reflecting again, I though Jim Shulman also did a great job at rebutting the special merit of the project by comparing the buildings VMP is planning for Mc Millan with the ones built elsewhere by each individual VMP partner. And showing that they just reusing over and over their formula. For a developer this is the actual and literally concrete proof in the pooding.

That wasn't very clever and irrefutable. Kudos to Jim.

I agree wholeheartedly w/ Jean-Christophe! Great job, Jim!!! And absolutely deflating tag-team work between Stephen Hansen and Jim: Each puncturing the myth of exemplary, site-specific architecture from a different angle. And putting under the MA's nose the damning faint praise of HPRB's assessment that the project finishes were coordinated.

I agree with Jane about the incredible sadness. Part of that sadness is that at every level, the government has supported the mediocrity of the project, and the Orwellian abuse of language that misrepresented and promoted it, year after year after year.

Rho and Carmen were friends of mine before i moved to Brookland, because
their delightful daughter Illiana was mys tudio asst. years ago in Mount
Pleasant. When I asked Rho about our issues with McMillan he told me about
his Mayor's Agent experience. He said Gray appointed him and that he was MA
for convention or verizon center. Out of nowhere, his "friends" from High
School, over 50 years ago, who never called him before ,, started calling.
He resigned!
My testimony attached covers the "legal argument" that Federal Covenants
pre-empt the entire DC Law the contorted process has followed and the
development is in violation of Federal requirements on the site. i think
even the Complan probably are really restricted, what belongs on the site
is "no density",not medium, or any other density.. We need to just keep in
a sensible PARK conservancy for one unitary open space, one unitary green
space and fun, kind of historic adventure park for kids.

Daniel Wolkoff <dangoldon@gmail.com>: Sep 13 03:02AM -0400

Who put Bill Rice on this thread? He works for the developers, gathering
info, and he's an asshole besides! He used to work for investigators on the
Hill years back, everyone knows it..
