Opening reception Friday, June 15 from 7 – 9 PM: Loose Ends
The most recent works of the five artists in Sparkplug display a deft navigation of the juncture between collectivism and the individual.
Loose Ends is the final exhibition of the current members of Sparkplug, DCAC' artists collective.  The exhibition features the works of Chajana DenHarder, Joe Hale, Chandi Kelly, Matt Smith, and Dafna Steinberg.  Through video, photography, painting and sculpture these artists study themes of shifting frames, deconstruction of systems, and neo-romanticism.  Loose Ends incorporates these themes as threads that link artist to artist but never tie them together, thereby highlighting the paradoxical interplay between collectivism and the individual.
These artists negotiate with and unseat the canons of their chosen disciplines: Matt Smith utilizes techniques originating from the craft of quilt making within the convention of minimalist post-painterly abstraction to make pictures that look like paintings but are ultimately stitched fabric.  Chandi Kelley uses digital photography, a medium associated with the obsolescence of photography's authority on the truth, to document museum-constructed environments that emulate a disappearing natural world.  Chajana DenHarder compromises the indexical nature associate with photography by not only physically tearing through pictures and disrupting them with paint, but she also re-photographs the aftermath, self-consciously reigning materiality back into the realm of illusion.  Dafna Steinberg tries to make sense of the present by piecing it together from the future, and Joe Hale raises his subjects to epic status using painterly gestures to break them apart with a machine.  Loose Ends represents each of these artists as open systems operating within the mutable environment of Sparkplug.
Loose Ends, an exhibition of artist participants in DCAC's Sparkplug program.  June 15 - July 15. Opening reception on Friday, June 15 from 7 to 9 pm.  Artists talk on Sunday, July 15 at 5:00 pm. All events are free and open to the public and are at DC Arts Center (DCAC), 2438 18th Street NW, Washington, DC.  For more information call 202-462-7833, email info@dcartscenter.org, or visit www.dcartscenter.org.

A Safer Dupont: A Community Meeting
The Dupont Circle Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) is hosting a community meeting for residents and business owners to discuss public safety issues in the neighborhood.  Police and Transportation officials will be in attendance, in addition to community leaders, elected representatives, and public safety liaisons.
This is an opportunity to have your voices heard on concerns, issues, and ideas from neighborhood crime to pedestrian and bicycle safety — and for you to help inform and guide the city's public safety agenda.  It will not be an opportunity for blaming and alleging, but rather an opportunity have your concerns noted and discussed so that they can be addressed productively and collaboratively — if not at the meeting, at least in the near future.
(Please email Public Safety Liaisons Kishan Putta and Noah Smith at kishanputta@gmail.com and noahsmith6@gmail.com if you have any specific issues or information you would like us to provide or discuss.)
