[WardFive] Re: [Brookland] round house

John,

It is sad.  Some things should remain the same. Wouldn't it been great if I would have been able to "love it in the 21st Century"!!

How about this for an Irony -- Had you not teamed up with my "wonderful" Padous, I might have been able to purchase it.  I have always loved the simple architectural marvel, ingenuity and uniqueness of the structure.  I wanted to make a Destination Bed and Breakfast for visiting families to our Monastery, Basilica and neighborhood. Ironic isn't it!!

The ripple effects of the many stones thrown in the pond of fairness is far reaching!! Nice to know it is touching you in so many ways.  As I drive through this neighborhood saying "if only", I guess that you will be saying the same when you pass the Round House.

I stopped by 10th and Irving St. last night. It was just twilight and I happened to be going by and so I stopped to see what is happening with the Round House. Pretty depressing. The upper dormer has been ripped out, an open hole gaping up at the sky and the back doors and windows, along with the back Doric columns removed. Steel supports forming a small square off the back outline the addition which is to come. It all seemed pointless and destructive; especially when I looked over the beautiful details left from the original building, the fish tail shingles, the lovely slender columns set aside, the curved beams everywhere. Even part of the brick walkways was being dismantled. Having grown up with this whimsical little place, which several generations enjoyed living in for over a hundred years, it seemed too bad that it couldn't have found someone to love it in the 21st century. Too impractical for us today. - John Feeley
