I was very sorry to miss the last downriver on the Potomac of the year and would love to hear how you did! I hope everyone is feeling ready for a great first day on the Cheat.
Right now the Cheat is a little below 3 ft (you subtract ~10 from the Albright Gauge) but it is supposed to rain up there all week. Standby while we monitor the gauge obsessively over the next few days.
Please plan to meet Saturday at 7 am at the Gaithersburg Park and Ride
Directions: From NORTHBOUND I-270: Use Exit 10 (MD-117 West, Clopper Road). DO NOT GO TO EXIT 11. At the end of the ramp continue west on Clopper Road to the traffic light at MD-124/Quince Orchard Road. Turn right (east) on MD-124/Quince Orchard Road. After passing under the railroad bridge, turn right at the traffic light into the Park & Ride lot.
Here we will load boats, arrange carpools, and head up to the Cheat, meeting at the put-in at 10:30 am. Everyone should go to the put-in to drop boats and passengers before driving shuttle. A vehicle with higher-clearance is recommended for the Cheat road.
Directions to the Cheat put-in: take 270 north toward Fredrick. Take exit 32 to merge on to I70 W to Hagerstown. Merge onto I 68 W toward Hagerstown (this is a left exit). Take exit 23 Bruceton Mills. Turn left at the end of the exit ramp. You will drive past the gas station where you turn for the take out. Pass Teter's Campground. The put in will be on the right just before a bridge that crosses the Cheat. We usually return to DC about 10 pm.
Expect Saturday to be cold and possibly snowing. You should bring your warmest gear & a change of clothes. You should also bring the boat that you are most comfortable in. Hopefully you are feeling good in your long boat by now. If not, it is OK to use your creek boat. You should also bring a lunch to eat before we put on and plenty of water. We want you to be hydrated, well rested, warm, and comfortable on our first Cheat descent of 2015.
