NAACP DC FEATURES DR. YOLANDRA HANCOCK AS GUEST SPEAKER FOR MAY GENERAL BODY MEETING

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The NAACP DC Branch May General Body Meeting will feature Dr. Yolandra Hancock as the Guest Speaker discussing health advocacy launching the NAACP's 12-Month Health Program.  The May General Body Meeting will be held on Thursday, May 12, 2016 at 7:00pm at the Thurgood Marshall Center, located at 1816 12th Street, NW Washington, DC 20009.

The NAACP DC Branch is implementing a 12-month Health Program to empower African-American women to adopt healthy lifestyles through gardening, cooking, healthy eating and physical activity.  This Health Program will include monthly nutrition activities and fitness programs from June 2016 through June 2017.

Health is a strategic priority of the NAACP DC Branch.  The NAACP Health Committee implements health initiatives to combat the health disparities facing people of color.   We seek to educate, motivate, and empower communities and children to exercise, eat healthy, and live healthier lifestyles. Chronic diseases and diet-related illnesses disproportionately impact low-income African-American residents in the District of Columbia. This Health Program will educate, empower and motivate participants to eat well-balanced nutritious meals and exercise regularly to meet individual health and fitness goals.  We have partnered with personal trainers, nutritionists, health coaches, and various health care professionals to offer exercise sessions and health coaching to promote health and wellness.

Dr. Yolandra Hancock is a pediatrician, pediatric obesity expert, and health and wellness consultant in the Washington, DC metro area with experience in the development and assessment of community-based obesity prevention and intervention programs. She previously served as a community pediatrician with the Diana L. and Stephen A. Goldberg Center for Community Pediatric Health at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC. She also served as the Associate Director of the Children's National Medical Center's Obesity Institute and led numerous activities aimed at preventing and treating childhood obesity.   She also serves as medical director for CRC Wellness Center and is the Chief Wellness Officer for OohRah Wellness.

The May General Body Meeting will be held on Thursday, May 12, 2016 launching our 12-Month Health Program. The meeting will begin at 7:00 pm at the Thurgood Marshall Center, located at 1816 12th Street, NW Washington, DC 20009.
