Congratulations!!
This election, we saw record turnout in the District. Manystood in long lines and endured cold temperatures to exercise their right to vote. Councilmember McDuffie has released the following statement about the Tuesdaynight's results:
"I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to President Obama and Vice President Biden on their hard-fought victory. I am happy that you will have the opportunity to finish the job you started. I would also like to offer my congratulations to my colleagues Chairman Mendelson; Councilmembers Alexander, Barry, Bowser and Orange; and Councilmember-Elect Grosso on their successful campaigns to the Council. I look forward to working with you all."
"Additionally, I would thank Councilmember Brown for his years of service to the District. Michael and I have become great friends during my time on the Council, and he will be greatly missed.
"Furthermore, let me express my congratulations to all the Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners that won in the various races throughout Ward 5. I look forward to working with you in the coming years on the behalf of Ward 5 and placing the interest and concerns of our residents first."
McDuffie Joined Norton to View New Lighting toEnhance Safety at the Fort Totten Social Path
This week, Councilmember McDuffie andCongresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) joined by National Park Service (NPS), Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and the U.S. Park Police to inspect two temporary lights installed by NPSand the WMATA along a well-traveled path that serves as a shortcut through Fort Totten Park. The two temporarylights, one at each end of the path, will provide illumination to help enhance safety and give residents traveling to and from the Metro station sight visibility.For more information, click here.
McDuffie, Cheh and the American Heart Association Celebrated National Eating Healthy Day at McKinley Tech
Councilmember McDuffie co-hosted a special event with Councilmember Cheh (D–Ward 3) and the American Heart Association at McKinley Technical High School to celebrate National Eating Healthy Day. In the District of Columbia, schools are making significant changes to improve the health of students and staff. McKinley Technical High School, which was recently named a National Blue Ribbon School, has received national recognition from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a coalition founded in part by President Bill Clinton, because it has distinguished itself with outstanding healthy eating and physical activity programs and policies.

McDuffie Honors Our Troops and Veterans on Veterans Day
Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie offered the following statement in honor of Veterans Day:
"On November 11, we will come together to celebrate and honor our nation's veterans – the generations of men and women who have sacrificed their lives for our freedoms and served our country with courage. As we mark another Veterans Day, it is important for each of us to remember the shared sacrifices our military and their families havemade in service to our nation. I encourage everyone to take the time out, especially on this day, to honor the heroes we lost, encourage our wounded and celebrate all the men and women who have fought to defend our country and freedoms."

Hearing for the Retail Incentive Amendment Act Of 2012
This week, the Committee on Economic Development and Housing held a public hearing on B19-0990, the "Retail Incentive Amendment Act Of 2012." The bill, introduced by Councilmember McDuffie along with Councilmember Brown (I – At-Large), designates Ward 5's two Great Streets, North Capitol Street and Rhode Island Avenue NE, as Retail Priority Areas. The legislation focuses on the portions of North Capitol Street (bounded by New York Avenue to the south and Rhode Island Avenue to the north) and Rhode Island Avenue NE (bounded by 4th Street, NE to the west and to Eastern Avenue, NE to the east). The Committee on Libraries, Parks, Recreation and Planning, will have a public hearing on B19-1016, the "Ward 5 Industrial Land Transformation Task Force Act of 2012." The hearing is scheduled for Thursday, November 15, 2012, at 10:30am in Room 500 of the John A. Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW.
This bill would establish the Ward 5 Industrial Land Transformation Task Force to develop a strategic plan for the modernization and adaptive reuse of industrial land in Ward 5. The Task Force, which would be convened and facilitated by the Director of the Office of Planning, would be required to submit a report on this strategic plan to the Mayor and the Council by July 1, 2013.

Show your Support for Ivy City's Day in Court
In July, the residents of Ivy City filed a lawsuit against the District and the Union Station Redevelopment Corporation to block the construction a Motor Coach Bus Lot being placed on the site of the historic Alexander Crummell School – located in the heart of Ward 5. Ivy City, which currently has over 10 acres of parking lots for trucks and buses, is fighting against the proposed plan to locate the bus lot in their neighborhood.

DPR will Close all Facilities in Observance of Veterans Day
The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) announced that on Monday, November 12 all Recreation Centers and Aquatic Centers will be closed in observance of Veterans Day. All scheduled permitted events and activities on DPR fields will be made available for the permitted time period only.
