[WardFive] 12th Street - Street and sidewalk cleaning

Good morning 5B04 Community -

As a result of litter & trash comments heard during Wed's ANC 5B community meeting (and yesterday while I was in our 5B04 community), I contacted DC Dept. of Public Works (via 311) to request street and sidewalk cleaning along 12th Street.  I also requested additional litter can installations at specific intersections along 12th (Evarts, Franklin & Hamlin).  Citizens voiced specific concerns about litter and trash along the curbs, tree boxes and sidewalk within the 2600-2900 block of 12th Street (RI Ave to Hamlin).  Currently, the 12th Street corridor is not designated for DPW's residential street sweeping program.

Hopefully, DPW will be out soon to clean those blocks and sidewalks along 12th Street.

For your assistance, below is useful street cleaning information from DPW's site:

1)  How to request DPW Street Sweeping Parking Restrictions for 12th Street:  DPW residential street sweeping program operates in densely-populated neighborhoods with high-volume pedestrian traffic.

However, citizens can obtain a petition to request residential street sweeping (call 727-7916 to request a petition). The petition must be signed by at least 80% of a block's residents indicating their agreement to honor the street sweeping parking restrictions.

Request the following services by calling 311 or using 311.dc.gov.

2) Street Sweeping

DPW residential street sweeping program operates in densely-populated neighborhoods with high-volume pedestrian traffic. You can sign a petition to request residential street sweeping. The petition must be signed by at least 80% of a block's residents indicating their agreement to honor the street sweeping parking restrictions.

Mechanical residential street sweeping is suspended during the winter because the sweepers emit a fine spray of water that can freeze and cause pedestrian and vehicular accidents.

3)  Public Litter Cans

You can call 311 to request installation, removal or repair of a public litter can in public/commercial areas or parks.  http://dpw.dc.gov/service/litter-can-collection-and-installation

Street and Alley Cleaning

DPW cleans residential and arterial streets using mechanical sweepers of various sizes. Between March 1 and October 31, sweepers operate along residential streets where signs are posted restricting parking during street sweeping hours. A $30 ticket may be issued for violating sweeping hours.

Golf cart-size sweepers, known as litter vacs, are used to vacuum litter from gutters and sidewalks in commercial areas, and larger sweepers are used along freeways and main arterials, which are swept year-round depending on the temperature.

How You Can Help

  • Pick up the litter and trash in your alley and around your property, rather than sweeping these items into the gutter to eventually end up in one of the District's rivers.
  • Residential property owners are responsible for maintaining the sidewalks and tree box spaces around their property. Commercial property owners are responsible for the public space around their property up to 18 inches from the curb into the street.
  • Use the street litter and recycling cans as you walk along the District's commercial streets. The litter cans are for pedestrian trash only, not household trash.
  • Avoid a street sweeping ticket by obeying the parking (No Parking Street Cleaning) signs along residential streets. Eighty percent of the residents of these streets signed petitions pledging to move their cars so sweeping would be effective.
  • Overnight scheduled sweeping of the District's major roadways occurs year-round, weather permitting. Motorists are urged to obey the signs when parking in these areas during the posted overnight sweeping hours.
  • To obtain street and alley cleaning services, call 311.
