AMAAAAZING. I guess that we just oppose because we are not as smart like you are -- imagine that.Tell me again why we have 600 kids homeless but we continue to fund and tax credit large developers who under the guise of "affordable" homes, build their rental dwellings -- their portfolio. But yet we are promoting "home-ownership". These places are Affordable to WHO? Do you know that a two bedroom at Rhode Island is about $2800mth. I wonder what the Affordable Rates are? Then 901 Monroe got more density/height but the "affordable" housing went from 10% to 8%.Tell me again why dig up a whole street to place rail lines -- do not replace the 100 year old infrastructure system, -- to install a Trolley line that has above ground powerlines only to drive antequated trolleys down the road but yet you are so smart that you can't see the lack of planning. And, is a Trolley Line really a Priority with all the rest that is needed in our City.Tell me again WHY would we close a school that could be part of a revitaling Campus for kids in our entire city which is the ONLY SCHOOL cluster adjacent to a Golf Course that would expose our children to a sport other than Basketball and Football. talk about utilizing natural resources. Instead of making this a campus that could utilize sports like golf, swimming, DIVING volleyball, track and field, to attract our kids into attending school and by chance get an education; but instead, you support a Trolley Barn on the Lawn.The irony in this is that you can see a Middle School being part of Rec. Center as a "Campus" but you can't see a Golf Course being Adjacent to a School and a Track/Football/Soccer field being part of a "Campus".Tell me again WHY would SUCH SMART INDIVIDUALS like yourself give close our Middle Schools and then give them away only to come back a few years and take our Rec. Center to make a Dual Purpose "State-of-the-Art Site -- and we shouldn't be concerned.1. last I checked, I have a right to my own opinion but just in case you missed it2. This issue isn't creating a major community problem. Much like most issues in our ward there is a group of vocal opposition who are in many instances the same group which serves as the vocal opposition to most things in our ward. Never mind thr fact that just across our southern boarder in ward 6 we have an excellent example of a school and community/recreation center. The Walker Jones campus works to serve as a school, library and recreation center and does so well.
Likewise over in Deanwood there is another great example but as usual we are still in this mindset of someone is trying to take something from us.
As for your question it was a few years ago when they changed the discussion to a middle school. If my memory serves me correctly it was supposed to at fir be just an arts school and then the middle school came along after the constant push and discussions about ward 5 not having one.

Neighbors, I read most of the circulating emails regarding the pros and cons on the proposed expansion of the Brookland E.S., however no one elucidated how the "Brookland Elementary" renovation project transitioned into the "Brookland Middle School" debate! It has always been my understanding that the matriculating students were "temporarily" reassigned to Bunker Hill Elementary until Brookland Elementary was completely renovated and the elementary students would "return" to their original school. I try to get to the core of issues, therefore can someone please identify the individual(s) who pushed this new agenda/proposal on the community because I do not recall a "Middle School" being an option to justifying closing Brookland Elementary.
PS: Since this issue has created a major community problem, lets collaborate and direct our energy into reopening Backus Jr. High as a Science and Technology Middle School.
